Online International Workshop, Friday 20th of October 2023
The ‘Out in the open: exploring outdoor spaces, daily life and sociality in Neolithic Europe’ workshop is a one-day on-line event that will take place on Friday the 20th of October 2023. This is the culminating event of the three-year research project ‘Beyond Oikos: outdoor spaces, daily life and sociality in Neolithic Greece’ (Number: 00229) https://bonds.keme.uoc.gr/, funded by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (H.F.R.I) that has been hosted at the University of Crete with cooperative organisation with the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research, University of Cambridge.
The Workshop will examine dynamic outdoor settlement spaces, human practices, and daily living in various cultural and social frameworks at both local and regional scales in Neolithic south-east Europe.It will explore quotidian and/or exceptional social practices in open-air spaces, through multi-disciplinary scientific methods and tools, aiming to produce multi-scale analyses and new hypotheses of social space and lifeways in the European Neolithic. A wide geographical coverage, the application of new scientific methods, and the integration of contemporary theoretical perspectives would expand research questions on outdoor spaces in diverse cultural settings. We are aiming for a broad and comparative discussion of outdoor spaces in Neolithic Europe through site specific examples and large-scale analyses. Various scientific methods, techniques, and tools would be employed in the oral presentations to unravel the many perspectives of human histories: GIS/spatial analysis, geoarchaeology, soil-micromorphology, geochemistry, organic remains (archaeobotany, archaeozoology), geophysical prospection, and material culture.
A very interesting line up of speakers, diverse material representations and a wide geographical coverage from different parts of Europe suggest an exciting day of archaeology.
